In the past five years enrolment applications for Year 7 have far exceeded available places. Bushland, gardens and parkland attractively enclose the school. With Lambton High and Newcastle High, Kotara High forms the KLN Senior Collegiate. A school improvement team leads Kotara High's planning and review process. There is a high level of parent and student involvement in school decision making. Religious education in Years 7-10 is part of the school's curriculum. Interest electives for Years 7-9 maintain a high level of student enthusiasm and attendance at the end of each year. Provision for hearing impaired students is made through integrated classes and the Hearing Support Unit. Nine other students with a range of disabilities are integrated with support in Years 7 to 11.
