Since its opening in 1985, Woodvale Senior High School has developed strong links with its school community which includes the suburbs of Kingsley, Woodvale and Edgewater. Located some 20 kilometres north of the city of Perth, the school's local-intake area is defined by Wanneroo Road and the Mitchell Freeway in an east-west alignment, Ocean Reef Road to the north and the Robinson Way cycle path to the south. A range of community facilities are close at hand including sporting venues, a public library and shopping centres.

The school has approximately 1600 students and 130 teaching staff which are locally selected. It enjoys the expertise of highly trained staff and the stability of small staff turnover. In 2006 three teachers at the school were successful in being nominated for the Premier Teacher of the Year Award. The experienced and very positive staff also has a high number of Level Three Classroom Teachers and many teachers who are trained in innovative teaching and learning techniques.

The strong community ties are transparent in the full adherence to the school's dress code, a highly engaged Parents and Citizens' group and a proactive School Council. A cultural exchange program to Japan has worked successfully for a number of years encouraging strong connections with Asia. In 2006, responding to an intensive review of its school community, Woodvale Senior High School extended opportunities for students by developing an Asian Awareness learning program that is compulsory for Year 8 students and forging a 'Sister School' relationship with a school in Jinan, China. The school also enjoys very strong links with the City of Joondalup who promote the splendid academic, cultural and sporting achievements of Woodvale Senior High School and sponsor many sporting, cultural and academic events. Due to the high quality education programs provided to its students, Woodvale Senior High School has been accredited to enrol international fee-paying students.

Academically, Woodvale Senior High School students perform in the top 25% of students in the state with state, national and international testing reinforcing the high quality of academic success the school enjoys. The school community endorsed academic rigour and personal excellence as Woodvale Senior High School's priority for 2007. This has resulted in a number of extra tuition classes being offered to students, outstanding programs to support student development and strong cross-curricular links with groups of teachers working on specialist areas such as transition from primary to secondary, Years 11 and 12, whole school structures and specialist programs.

Among the outstanding specialist programs offered are the Academic Extension Program (AEP), the music program (recently selected to play for the Prime Minister's visit to the community), basketball, soccer, science enrichment and Forensics. Because of the high success of the school, there are long waiting lists for entry unless you live in the local-intake area or are successful in gaining entry to a specialist program.
