Mount Barker serves a large rural area surrounding the town site predominantly within the Plantagenet Shire. The community is diverse and has a strong sense of involvement and ownership of the school.
The school enjoys the full academic range of students and has a growing reputation for achieving excellence in all student outcomes - TEE, Vocational and Workplace Learning. The School and community is proud of many positive achievements of students with special needs or educational issues such as literacy, numeracy, health and mental health. Through inclusion, integration and early intervention needs are identified and met.
The 365 students and their families are known well by school staff and those working for community groups servicing the school. The smallness of the school is a real strength.
The school has been chosen as the site for the 'Mount Barker Community College. This will see the growth of a College providing high quality learning and services for students from K to Y12 with TAFE and University links.
A 500-acre school farm surrounds the whole school site. Farm enterprise is a part of the curriculum for all in Years 8 and 9. The farm is also an important resource for the learning in many learning areas, especially Science and Society and Environment. Students may elect to continue with study through Years 10 - 12, specialising in horticulture, animal husbandry, viticulture and aquaculture.
