Norwood Secondary College in Byron Street, Ringwood North is a single campus co-educational college with an enrolment of 1048 students. Families from a wide geographic area choose to send their children to Norwood because of its reputation and its particular philosophies and educational opportunities. The college is classified by the Department of Education Employment and Training (DEET) as belonging in “Like” School Group 2, indicating a low proportion of students for whom English is not the main language spoken at home and a low proportion of students receiving the Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) or Austudy. The college has an excellent tradition of success in all areas of student endeavour, particularly academic results, sport and music.
The diverse range of academic, sporting and co-curricular activities provides an enriched environment where all are challenged to reach their potential. Students can demonstrate their skills and knowledge by choosing to take part in activities such as the Australian Mathematics Competition, Debating Association of Victoria Competitions, inter-school sport, music and drama experiences such as the 1999 College Production – ‘Midsummer Nights Dream’.
The college community takes pride in its record of VCE results. Many students have obtained excellent results and gained entry to chosen courses. A pleasing number of students who seek tertiary studies receive their first preference.
The college supports a camping program at several year levels. Year 7 students enjoy their orientation camp which includes many outdoor experiences. A Surfing Camp is offered to Year 9 students while Year 11 students traditionally visit Central Australia. Many subject based excursions and camps continue throughout the year. These include Outdoor Education to Wilson’s Promontory and Cathedral Ranges, Geography to Woori Yallock, and Instrumental Music at Camp Adanac. Middle School students have the opportunity to participate in a Snow Camp at Mt Buller. Students are offered the opportunity to participate in overseas language based tours to Bali and Noumea as part of our Languages Other than English (LOTE) program. Thirty Year 9 students participate in our newly established Victorian Youth Development Program (VYDP) which links Norwood to the Naval Reserve and provides opportunities in areas such as sailing, First Aid and the internationally recognised Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
