The establishment of the Maryborough Education Centre (MEC) in July 2005, in the rural town of Maryborough, population 8,000, 65 kilometres from the two larger regional centres of Ballarat and Bendigo, brought together four schools—Maryborough East Primary School, Maryborough Primary School, Maryborough Regional College (two campuses) and Maryborough Specialist School.
The MEC is a three staged development:
Stage 1 Primary and Specialist Needs Villages opened in 2006;
Stage 2 Secondary Village from Term 2, 2007;
Stage 3 TAFE and Early Childhood Centre.
While student groupings will initially be in traditional primary/secondary school structures, the Centre’s strategic plan adopts the stages of schooling approach—Early Years (P–4), Middle Years (5–8), and Later Years (9–12).
The MEC is seen as an important vehicle for improving the social well-being of the community. The use of the Centre outside of normal school hours will enhance and extend this role in the community and the opportunity exists for a range of programs to be offered that will improve the skills and capacities of the residents in the Shire.
