Maryborough State High School is located in the Wide Bay region and services the community of Maryborough City, Woocoo and Tiaro Shires. The school is situated within walking distance of the city centre.
The Heritage City of Maryborough is supported by a sound agricultural and tourist industry with close links to Fraser Island. Local larger industries include Walkers Ltd (manufacturing Queensland electric trains and mining equipment), Hyne and Son timber and the Maryborough Sugar Mill. The community is serviced by a range of educational institutions including a TAFE Institute and university campus at Hervey Bay.
The community consists of a well-established working class population. The moderate cost housing, new housing developments and coastal location attract steady growth. The city of Maryborough has a wealth of history and is promoted as the 'Heritage City'. We have a small indigenous population with 3.5% of students recognised. Our Community Education Counsellor and Aboriginal Teacher Aide support these students and their families.
The school aims to involve expertise from the community to assist individual students and to play a role in such groups as the Maryborough Area School Industry Placement Program and the School Council. Students are encouraged to take on individual responsibility for learning. The school structures, curriculum and work practices support student endeavours to improve performance outcomes. The Student Council provides representation for students in the functioning of the school.
