Malanda State High School is located on the southern outskirts of the township of Malanda, about one hours drive south west of Cairns. The school caters for young Australians growing up in a rural setting with a student enrolment of just in excess of 400.
The school is organised into two Sub-Schools, the Junior School (Years 8 to 10) and the Senior School (Years 11 and 12). Each Year level has anywhere between 80 and 100 students in the cohort, and we have in excess of 30 teachers on site at any one time. The school is generally able to offer all the benefits of a large school (broad range of subject choice and co-curricular activities) while enjoying the advantages of a small school (close personal relationships between teachers and students).
The school's major objective in the next twelve months is to bring a greater focus to its curriculum, and teaching and learning operations. In a rapidly changing society it is important for teachers to effectively engage young people in all types of learning.
Our willingness to embrace innovation and change, and, above all, our highly educated and dedicated staff, are what provides the critical difference at Malanda High. In 2004, 2005 and 2006 the school was recognised as one of Far North Queensland's most progressive and innovative as the regional winner of Education Queensland's Showcase For Excellence Award in Middle Phase of Learning (2004/50 and Academic Excellence (2006).
