The Longreach School of Distance Education, together with a number of other Schools of Distance Education, forms part of a network of distance education services provided by the Queensland Department of Education.

Other Schools of Distance Education are located at Cairns, Charters Towers, Mount Isa, Brisbane, Charleville and Emerald.

LSODE's Distance Education enrolments come from an area which is bounded by Bogantungan in the east, Bedourie in the west, Windorah in the south and Kynuna in the north. The thirteen shires in the area are: Aramac, Alpha, Barcaldine, Barcoo, Blackall, Diamantina, Flinders, Ilfracombe, Isisford, Jericho, Longreach, Tambo and Winton; covering 402 712 square kilometres. The majority of families own or operate extensive sheep and/or beef grazing properties, and because of this isolation, the children use distance learning.

The school is co-educational and the curriculum covers prep-school to Year 10, and is provided through correspondence papers and daily telephone lessons. These are supervised in the home by a home tutor, with support and professional assistance provided by the school's teaching staff.

Mail dispatches from the school provide a vital link between the school and the home.

The school is equipped with facilities and resources to cater for its unique needs and conditions; telephones for the transmission of lessons from seven studios, two vehicles for home visits and a well-stocked and fully automated library. All students in the upper primary and secondary grades have access to computers.

We have a very strong and supportive school community, which has been built up over a number of years through the combined efforts of students, teachers, home tutors, parents and school support staff working together towards the achievement of our school's mission.
