CHHS opened in 2000. A united school culture has been developed by establishing across school management, curriculum and special programs working teams. This took place despite the challenge that, for most of 2000, the school operated from a face-to-face site at Kendall and a distance education centre at Port Macquarie.

Face-to-face students are drawn from the local Camden Haven community and distance education students enrol from the Central Coast to Coffs Harbour and inland from the New England Highway, Armidale as well as Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands.

The move to the new school occurred for term four. There is a developing focus on learning as the core business and specific exit outcomes for students. This focus is a result of surveying parents and staff at school development sessions, and ongoing discussions with SRC members. The exit outcomes include knowledge, understandings and social and life skills.

The school has magnificent facilities including a multipurpose centre, a performing arts space, a school farm, a library, ovals, courts and modern technology. A strong field services program operates for distance education students.

During 2000 every full-time student was visited at home at least once by teachers; a minimum of twenty field schools have been conducted at centres local to students. Discipline and welfare are school priorities which have been identified by staff analysing school needs. The school motto, "Aim for the Highest", provides a positive direction for the school. This motto was developed by staff, student and parents.
