Gordonvale State High School services the communities of Gordonvale, Aloomba, Edmonton and the Aboriginal community of Yarrabah. The school is situated in extensive and attractive grounds and has ready access to a number of local tourist features including the Mulgrave River, Walsh's Pyramid, Cairns Inlet, beaches, the Great Barrier Reef and the Atherton Tablelands.

The township of Gordonvale is located approximately 20km south of Cairns. Although the town still revolves around cane farming and its sub- industries, it is rapidly developing into a suburb of Cairns with many cane farms being replaced by housing developments.

Since establishment in 1965 our High School has prided itself on being a full-service school for the community of Gordonvale and surrounds. As we have grown to the 650 student mark this fine reputation still holds true, however now our school embraces a wider community and responds to the needs of a global society. This necessitates the teaching and learning of skill sets far different to those of 40 years ago.

Our High School aims to provide  skills, experiences and a quality of education that will best enable our students to step into this global society.

We aim to build the best possible base for Life Long Learning in our Year 8 to Year 10 programs and use this as the platform for the diverse range of offerings in Senior.
